On Friday evening, November 29, Sougwen Chung will be sharing two performances at Victoria and Albert Museum's Friday Late - Wild Digits. "Using technology in radical ways, artists disrupt the impact of Internet culture, artificial intelligence, surveillance and algorithms. In these imaginative spaces, experience new worlds where we co-create with robots, co-live with other species and rewild natural habitats. This Friday Late, curated as part of V&A’s inaugural Digital Art Season, spotlights an emerging network of critical practices shaping the UK …
Coming Friday, Sougwen Chung will participate in a panel on Asia Futurism, organized in collaboration with Artnet, as part of The Art Market 2050. The discussion will also feature Carrie Chan (V&A) and Sammi Liu (Tabula Rasa Gallery), with moderation by Vivienne Chow (Artnet). As part of the first edition of the Mesh Festival, two works by Sougwen Chung will be exhibited at der TANK: BODY MACHINE (MERIDIANS) and ECOLOGIES OF BECOMING-WITH. BODY MACHINE features biomimetic robotic speculations created using custom training models, spatial technologies, and motion capture. The work reimagines gestural lines as 'Machine Meridians,' representing the body as a generative system and contributing to Chung’s ongoing exploration of collaboration with the bespoke D.O.U.G._ robotic system. In addition, ECOLOGIES OF BECOMING-WITH, comprising of an installation and a painting, serves as …
SPECTRAL, a kinetic installation by Sougwen Chung, will be part of the upcoming selling exhibition SPACES: Digital Innovation Meets Contemporary Art at Phillips London, curated by HOFA Gallery. The work, created in collaboration with the robotic system D.O.U.G._4 linked to the artist’s brainwaves, translates thoughts into delicate movements across a transparent canvas. The convergence of AI and human expression takes centre stage, offering a profound meditation on the possibilities of collaboration between mind and machine. Alongside SPECTRAL, the exhibition will showcase work by visionaries …
Sougwen's latest collection of spatial drawings, rooted in generative sculpture and satellite imagery, is currently on view at EXPANDED.ART GALLERY until October 5. SEED THEORY is a series seeded from human movement, glacial textures, and the earth as seen from above. SEED THEORY draws inspiration from the research of the late microbiologist Lynn Margulis. Her pioneering theory of planetary symbiosis — and earth as a co-creative and co-regulatory system challenge conventional views of human beings and technology as separate from nature. …
As the final days of August unfolded, Chung presented a debut solo exhibition in Germany at Munich's Muffatwerk. Curated and produced by their studio, SCILICET, the exhibition featured three new works as part of GENESIS, an ongoing research project that delves into the evolution of the drawn line and the robotic form. The new pieces included SPECTRAL, a kinetic installation powered by the robotic system D.O.U.G._4, which responded to brainwaves, gracefully echoing their patterns on a transparent canvas; BODY MACHINE, a series of digital …
This July, Sougwen 愫君 Chung had the honor of participating in the Generative Art Summit Berlin, where the intersection of AI and art took centre stage. The event explored pressing questions around the relationship between human creativity and machine intelligence, with discussions led by Sabine Himmelsbach, director of the HEK (House of Electronic Arts) in Basel. Alongside robotics and AI pioneer Mario Klingemann and fellow AI art pioneer Ivona Tau, Chung joined the conversation on the evolving dynamics and delicate tension …
With the support of the Association for Robots in Architecture, Sougwen had the pleasure of participating in ROB|ARCH 2024, delivering a keynote lecture on the conference's main theme, Beyond Optimization, this past May. Inspired by insightful lectures from Brian Ringley and Yusuke Obuchi, Chung left the conference with fresh perspectives on the reality of the incomputable. Thank you to the organizers, the University of Toronto (UofT) and Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), for making the event possible.
🎶 Summer speaking dates 🎶 On my way to Toronto as a keynote speaker for #ROBARCH2024 with @robotsinarchitecture. Excited to be reunited with @maria_yablonina and @madeline.gannon, two of my favourite contemporary roboticists.

This winter, Sougwen 愫君 Chung participated in Art Dubai 2024 in collaboration with HOFA (London). The installation delved into the relationship between artificial intelligence, robotics, and human creativity, highlighting the complexities and unpredictability of this interaction. "Sougwen’s algorithms breathe life into digital canvases [...]"Auronda Scalera and Alfredo Cramerotti, Co-Curators of Art Dubai Digital 2024, in the article published on Art Dubai (18.02.2024) "She [Chung] is compelled by our human capacity to anthropomorphize our relationship to machines, particularly robots, and how they can effectively …
‘Virtual Ink’ showcases the figural fluid studies of Sougwen 愫君 Chung, part of an ongoing research practice exploring and expanding the boundaries of art and technology. For more than a decade, Chinese-Canadian artist and researcher Sougwen Chung has been investigating the poetics of mark-making across myriad disciplines, including virtual reality, robotics and ai systems. Chung began these ‘post-human subject studies’ in 2015, and the body of work presented in ‘Virtual Ink’ is the culmination of almost seven years of development. Building …
